How to become a fashion photographer and Professional photographer
A career in fashion photography doesn't have to be an impossible dream. With its huge audience, high pay-checks and glamorous international lifestyle, fashion photography may seem like one of the world's most sought-after professions. But for every fashion photographer who makes it through the door of a top magazine, a thousand others find their niche fashion advertising, art photography, celebrity portraiture or even paparazzi work to make a living.

Sydney photographer Eva Mueller agree that breaking into the industry can be hard. But they have some tips for beginners on setting up a portfolio, submitting work to magazine picture editors, choosing the right photo agency and even getting shown in a gallery.

Setting up a portfolio
"Having been around, I know how hard it is to get in the door," says Allure magazine photo editor Clio McNicholl, who receives around 50 unsolicited portfolios a month. Many photographers find that websites offer an inexpensive way to showcase a relatively large quantity of images. Eva Mueller a Munich-born fashion and beauty photographer who has been living and working in Manhattan for ten years, points out that computer editing is also a method of keeping down retouching and printing costs.

Many fashion photographers find the sharp, bright imaging of 4 x 5" transparencies show off their work to best effect. Tear-sheets (literally, pages ripped from a magazine) are great if you've been published, but good quality, 8 x 10" prints are also OK.

Picking your picture editor
"Most people who cold call me haven't done their research, which is the world's biggest mistake," says Clio McNicholl. When you submit work to photo editors, remember that you're "showing" rather than "selling". Editors almost never buy the specific image they see before them; they're looking for a photographer who can execute future commissions. The best way to grab an editor's attention is to show previously published work. "Because there's such an over-supply of photographers, a lot of magazines really take advantage of that fact," says Eva Mueller. McNicholl says Allure's rates start at $350 a day for unknown photographers, up to $130,000 for a fashion spread.

If your work speaks clearly, you'll stand a much better chance with picture editors than with vague or ambiguous images. When you're submitting your work, remember: Call the magazine ahead and get the name of the person to whose attention the submission should be marked. Label everything with your name and telephone number. Send working prints or transparencies, not originals. Include a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you want the work back. Some clients really take advantage of the fact that there are so many photographers out there: they make you pay for the whole shoot, they alter your pictures and don't tell you when they drop the story. Sometimes they're just really disrespectful toward the photographer." There is a way to avoid having to deal with photo editors, however: and that's to have a photo agency do the selling on your behalf.

Finding a photo agent
Photo agencies exist to liaise with clients and sell photographers' work on their behalf. They benefit everyone from start-out photographers, who may not have many industry contacts, to seasoned professionals, who are too busy to take care of business dealings themselves. Usually the photographer doesn't have enough time to take care of everything."

Agencies can also re-sell your work in several different markets, acting as a mini publicist and giving career advice. "The young photographer has to understand their target, in terms of their personal goals the direction the photographer wants to take," she says. Agents recommend treating your first contact with them as seriously as if it were a job interview. A photo agency is not the only place that can sell your work. If you're more interested in concentrating on your personal vision than taking commercial work, you can also considering exhibiting in a fine art photography gallery.

Getting a gallery
While gelatin silver prints are the staple of fine art photography, you'll find a healthy interest both in contemporary photos using antique methods (such as Chuck Close's daguerreotypes), as well as modern printing methods, including Cibachromes and C-prints.

The most important thing to remember about working with a gallery is to maintain a proper business relationship. You should also discuss whether you are free to have relationships with other galleries, or if your gallery expects exclusivity. If you have a New York gallery, for example, but then arrange to have a show in Los Angeles, sometimes the New York gallery will expect a cut (typically 10%).

How to Get a Job as a Graphic Designer

"Hi.. Thanks!"

Which got me thinking about how difficult it was for me and some of the fellow graphic design students I studied with to get a job in the design industry back in 1999 (yes that long ago!) straight out of design college. I snapped up a job with a Central London design agency in Soho within 2 weeks of leaving college but looking back it wasn't really the right job for me then. Though just 13 months later I changed positions and worked for a great design agency based in London Bridge and learned a huge amount as well as working on lots of different types of projects as a designer.

Anyway competition was fierce then BUT the amount of graphic design and other design courses available in art colleges and universities up and down the college has grown hugely since then.

So here are a few tips on (like Adam asked) "how to get into the UK Design industry"

The Portfolio:
Having a great design portfolio is a must. Think about the kind of work the agency your applying to does and try to tailor your portfolio towards that. For example if they specialise in corporate identity and branding work try to include work of this kind.

Be ready to talk about your design work, what inspired you, why you approached the project in the way you did, even choice of typeface, colours, imagery etc. Show them some of your sketchs and development work, some agencies what to see your scribbles more than the finished work as it shows your design process and how you think!

Before taking your portfolio along to job interviews, make sure you show it to a people (tutors, other design students) talk them through it, get them to ask you questions about your design work and respond with suitable answers.

Work Experience:
Offer to do some work experience with a design company who's work you really admire (for free if you have to!), even if its just a week then spend that week wowing them, making the tea, producing great work, take an interest in everything relating to that design company. If the company really like you during your work experience they might offer you a full time job!
This worked very well as they got me a new job within 2 weeks. Remember what you wear can be seen as a reflection of yourself and your design style or preferences.

Behaviour:
Be yourself, be calm and open to discussing your work and the work of the design agency. Remember to ask questions about what work they produce and what your role would be. If you go for an interview and they don't give you a job, don't worry, your work just might not be suitable for that particular design agency.

It's hard to enter these schools as competition is high, and they tend to be very selective. You apply by sending a portfolio of drawings of your designs. Drawing is also an important skill for a designer – it is the way you communicate your ideas. In order to build an impressive portfolio it's a good idea to have some experience in sketching; taking art classes will help you understand form and proportion.

What school will do for you
Most fashion programs are three to four years long. During that time you will take fine arts classes and study drawing, color composition and form. One of the most important advantages of design schools is that they work really closely with the industry. Parsons, for example, have "designer critic projects" where successful designers like Donna Karan and Michael Kors work directly with the graduating students. One very important event is the fashion show at the end of the last semester, when graduating students show their collections. A lot of important people from the fashion industry attend these shows to scout new talent.

Alternative routes
"Let's be realistic," says Carol Mongo at Parsons, "School's not for everyone. If you're just looking to get a job in the fashion industry – not a career as a designer – you probably don't need to go school." If you want to work as a seamstress or a patternmaker, the best thing is probably to apply for an internship at a fashion house and work your way up. For example, Dior's brightest new star, men's wear designer Hedi Slimane, had a degree in journalism when he started working with men's wear designer José Levy. Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquière is another example of a brilliantly successful designer who learned the jobs hands-on, as an assistant at Jean-Paul Gaultier. Usually, you apply for an internship by sending a portfolio to a fashion house you're interested in.

Understanding the business
Unfortunately, it's not enough for a designer to be creative; you also have to have some business sense. A lot of fashion schools are currently increasing business classes in their curriculum. "Our students have to be smart enough to know how to negotiate a contract, or to pick a business partner," says Carol Mongo.

In my day job I run one of the country's myriad of graphic design companies - I'd like to think that we are 'small but beautifully formed', employing six people including myself and enjoying the patronage of a variety of customers, big and small, across a range of business sectors.

One of the imponderables of running graphic design agencies concerns graphic design pricing - after all, how much is creative talent worth? Of course if you are fortunate enough to be a Saatchi & Saatchi or Ogilvy & Mather of the world you can more or less name your own price, there being an almost inherent snob value of being able to say that "one has Saatchi's as one's agency".

Their challenge is in maintaining their market share, for my company, Brackenhill, we don't begin to register on any market share measurement and so we have a much more mundane challenge; Namely to win enough work to firstly pay the staff, secondly pay the bills, thirdly pay me and finally (and hopefully) make a profit and grow. The benefit that the bigger agencies do have is the availability of resource to prepare pitches on a speculative basis knowing that they're going to be invited to enough pitches that by the law of averages they'll win their fair share and thus give them a return on the investment.

For smaller agencies, free pitching is anathema, in the first place the 'free' bit relates to the prospective client only! Consequently you can have say 60 or more hopefuls completing arduous tender documents and preparing some design ideas as to how they would represent a certain facet of the creative brief.

More significantly though, if you can't evidence previous experience of working with a public sector client then you're 'pushing the boulder up the hill'. As an example of how ludicrous this process can be, before I bought the company, Brackenhill had applied to be a graphic design supplier to a local Metropolitan District Council.


The Right Cleaning Tools Make Your Job Easier

There’s nothing like walking into a house that’s just been cleaned. Ahhhh….that clean, bright smell. In that regard, cleaning is therapeutic. Various cleaning tools offer different advantages – from sheer cleaning and scrubbing power, to sanitary qualities, to their ability to do specific jobs, such as picking up hair and lint. Well, when it comes to surfaces such as ceramic topped stoves, cleaning may be overlooked because they are such a pain to clean. Maybe it’s time to get serious about investing in the right tools to get the job done.

Tools That Make Cleaning Easier
1.Microfiber cleaning cloths.
These cloths are miracle workers. They make cleaning a snap and shine like nothing else. Tired of spraying gallons of window cleaner on your granite surfaces and using two rolls of paper towels to make them shine? Microfiber cleaning cloths shine and brighten granite, glass, chrome or metal, and work WONDERS on ceramic stovetops.

2.Cleaning cloths.
When it comes to dusting or overall cleaning, nothing can compare to a good quality cleaning cloth. No, your husband’s old undershirt is not the tool of choice for dusting. Besides that, who WANTS to clean with an old t-shirt? Old clothes are for the trash, not for cleaning. Purchase a set of 10 white dish or cleaning cloths to be used only for cleaning.

These should be used for three different distinct purposes:

1.General cleaning, such as windows, mirrors, and polishing metal

2.Furniture dusting and polishing

3.Scrubbing, such as counters, walls, floors, etc.
Now, to keep your interest in cleaning, make sure to keep your cloths clean by washing them regularly in HOT water. Having a clean cloth to begin with will keep you interested in cleaning and WON’T spread more dirt and grime around.

4.Electrostatic mopping/dusting cloths.
Do yourself a favor and follow vacuuming with an electrostatic mop! It does an amazing job.

5.Baby wipes.
No, these versatile cleaning cloths are great from removing everything from eye make-up to messy faces.

6.Paper towels.
Cleaning toilets is a nasty job, but one of the most important when it comes to having a clean house. Keep a spray cleaner such as 409 or Pine Sol in a cabinet close to the toilet with a roll of paper towels to clean when needed. Use the paper towels to clean the seat and outside of the bowl. Ick.

7.Toothbrush.
Keep a toothbrush around to clean corners of grout, stained tops of woodwork, or any nook and cranny that needs a scrubbing.

8.Wastebasket liners.
Keeping trash cans lined is another “clean” idea that keeps can nice and clean.

9.Telescoping duster.
Get a telescoping duster to help you reach into high corners, dust chandeliers, or tops of bookcases.

10. The Right Paint.
Strange as it seems, paint can be your best friend when it comes to cleaning. If you have flat paint on your walls, you will have a very difficult time cleaning your walls of fingerprints and other stains. Your painter may kick and scream, but the next time it comes to paint a room, choose egg shel or other paint finish that can be cleaned.

11.Brush for scrubbing.

12.Squeegees.
These are essential for cleaning windows. Yes, windows. You’ve got to clean them, too. A squeegee will help you clean windows without having to wipe everything completely dry or use up fifty rolls of paper towels. Use a cleaning cloth to wipe any excess liquid.

13.Tall broom & mop.
Mops and brooms are often too short for you to really apply adequate pressure for cleaning. Select brooms and mops from janitorial supply stores or home improvement centers, like Lowe’s, to find brooms that are heavy-duty and industrial-sized.

A. The Ultimate Design For The Single Woman
You don't get to forty years of age without your fair share of disastrous relationships - and I've had more than my fair share. There was the time the cat died and I had to bury her myself. Picking up the cold, stiff body of something I loved so dearly should have been a man's department (or a man!).

Last night's incident involving a cork screw and a corked bottle of wine just tipped me over the edge and I feel the need to act. I believe a new design is called for. One that doesn't scratch, moan, snore, grow a beer belly and demand full power over the remote control.

I have contacted a company that can help with my new product design. At our first consultation, we sit and discuss my idea, formulating a design that my consultants believe we can eventually patent and mass produce with industrial design adaptations.

A 3D image first produced needs a little work, I have to say. A little larger across the chest please, a little leaner in the leg please. The company eventually produce a product design a little closer to what I have in mind. It looks like a man and will be programmable for all the jobs a man can do without the socks to wash and the random toenails left in the carpet.

The company manufacture my new model from metalwork. All he needs is the occasional oil and wipe with a soft cloth, none of this meat and two veg business. Firstly my product design, and I will be calling him Gerald from now on, will be programmed with a few key phrases. What else do I need?

General daily activities are programmed into Gerald, bin days, wash day, ironing etc. Also essential is the necessary inbuilt toolbox for car maintenance. Next is the added extras: the electronic corkscrew on the hand, spare sockets in the chest for extreme ironing anywhere in the house and the extra padding that can be applied to the hands for foot massaging.

B. Career Fields That Use AutoCAD
So you are the master of AutoCAD, you know it front to back, you know it like the palm of your hand, you could use it hung upside-down blind folded and with one hand. I wrote an article about Earning Money with AutoCAD, but what if you want a career? Industrial design is more about improving a product for mass production. Although you might think that you don't need AutoCAD for industrial design, you would be wrong.

(Sorry) Architecture is such a broad term, but CAD is defiantly used for the layout of buildings in architecture, whether it is a house or an office. The designing of houses and house layouts is a field that interests me and I suggest you check it out as well because it is really fun designing a custom house for everyone to see and hopefully buy.

The last field I will look at is Engineering. Engineering is another broad term. There are many types of engineering, such as electrical, architectural, civil. Engineering deals more with the actual forces on different types of materials or structures. This field would probably not use AutoCAD as much, but the other programs run on the same concept so it is a great start.

Just to recap, the three main career field you could look in are Industrial Design, Architecture, and Engineering.I really wanted to address students who do not know what they would like to do as a career yet but have skills in AutoCAD.


How to Design a Search Engine Friendly Web Site

Many web site designers don't design their sites for the search engines. Your beautifully designed web site may have cost you thousands of dollars but it still needs to attract visitors tobeprofitable.Here are 12 highly effective strategies for designing a search engine friendly web site: Use the keyword research tool, Wordtracker (wordtracker.com) to research the mostpopular keywords that pertain to the subject matter of your web site.

1. Create a list of approximately 100 keywords or keyword phrases that you can include within your web pages. Aim to please the search engines as well as your web site visitors.

The template would be the generic header and from that you would create each individual page header.
