Good Taste in Dress

Posted: Saturday, November 9, 2013

By Robert Scott

When you have learned what type of garment is most becoming to you, how to select styles, and how to combine materials, you will be able to dress distinctively, in good taste, and much more economically than your neighbor who has not taken time to study the principles of dress and what it means in the way of adornment, developing ideals, and ultimate economy.

Women who know but little about sewing often marvel at the woman who at a glance can tell from the material just what style would be best suited to that material, or who, when she sees a person, can say quickly and with authority what kind of dress that person should wear to bring out her individual type of beauty.

Ability in this direction is usually attributed to cleverness or unusual talent; however, you who understand dress harmony can acquire such ability. With a thorough understanding of line, material, and color you will be able to determine instantly the fitness of certain lines to certain types, and you can broaden your knowledge by carefully observing individuals and styles and the way in which individuals adapt certain styles to themselves.

GETTING IDEAS FROM GOOD AND BAD DRESSERS

The true artist does not mar nor disfigure the surface he wishes to decorate; rather, he works with one thought in mind--beauty of the whole. The dressmaker or home woman who makes really beautiful garments must have not only the qualifications of a designer, but the artistic sense of the artist--must understand line and its relation to color and the individual.

An excellent way in which you may acquire a broad, practical knowledge of good line is to observe carefully and discriminately the women who wear really distinctive clothes and those who wear really ordinary clothes.

Women in dowdy clothes rarely show evidence of style or thought of design, nor do they show any regard for the essentials of correct dress; thus they teach the observer to avoid any such condition in making up garments.

Women who wear really good garments will serve other women as an inspiration to better dressing, and their costumes will suggest possibilities in other fabrics, colors, and designs.

To achieve distinctiveness in dress, never overlook the opportunity of going where good clothes are to be seen--receptions, parties, club meetings, in fact, all places where different kinds of costumes are worn. Study the suitability of the garment for the occasion. Study closely the accessories of the costume, and note how they bring out or detract from the costume itself; then, in matters regarding your own dress or the dress of others, you will be able to suggest little touches that will enhance the beauty of a costume and add materially to its attractiveness.

The theater is an excellent field of inspiration for constructive development in good dressing, not only from the point of correct and pleasing line and color in dress, but as an expression of character or type and appropriateness of environment and occasion.

A successful actress, as I have said before, not infrequently owes a large measure of her success to a close and intelligent study of dress.

Far-seeing theater managers demand a strict adherence to the best in prevailing and historical modes, knowing that, even when not fully understood by all their public, the natural feeling of pleasure and satisfaction obtained from the presentation of correct costuming has much to do with the ultimate success of their production.

It is frequently said that the church-going women folk evidence splendid taste in dress, and that the clothes they wear are excellent style criterions, because they are appropriate for the majority.

A prominent New York designer made a practice of attending a Fifth Avenue church to study the styles of the women in attendance. It may perchance seem irreverent to consider fashion in connection with church. But how many times at Sunday dinner, when the text of the sermon has been discussed, does not some member of the family say, "Did you notice what a pretty dress or hat Miss or Mrs. So and So had on this morning?"

"The artisan hurries through his work to get his dinner; the artist hurries through his dinner to get to his work," is a saying that may well be applied directly to women in their relation to the important subject of clothes.

You will study clothes and admire or criticize them according to your taste and your knowledge of what clothes express.

READY-TO-WEAR GARMENTS AS AN AID

Ready-to-wear garments are also worthy of study in developing good taste in dress.

Such garments are constructed as nearly as manufacturers can plan to please the masses of women, in the majority of cases being hurriedly made and without much regard for workmanship. Rather than durability or practicability of the garment, it is the general outline--the style effect--they strive for, and it is for this reason that the dressmaker or the woman who makes her own clothes should observe such garments carefully.

Oftentimes ready-to-wear garments display a smartness produced by the carefully careless way they are put together, a smartness that is often lost--killed, as it were--by the woman who sews too carefully and too well. It is well to remember this, and learn from ready-to-wear garments, when making clothes for yourself, to strive occasionally for effect rather than perfection in workmanship. When both qualities are attained in a garment, namely, style and good workmanship, the triumph is complete.

Some ladies are thin, some fat, some tall, some in combinations, etc. Therefore dressing has to be specified according to the body types and structure. One outfit that looks stunning on pear shaped figure might not suit at all to woman with rectangular body type. It is important to form a personal style statement that enhances your figure and individuality. You should never wear anything just the heck for it, nor follow fashion trends blindly! Your clothes speak a lot about yourself so fill-up your wardrobe according to your personal taste and suitability. . Do not wear clothes with vertical design and stripes as it would make you look thinner.
. Wear starched fabrics and fabric that is thick or fluffy like organza, cotton, jute, velvet, spur fabrics.

. Go for medium sized prints instead of huge or too small prints.

. Selection of too loose clothes would worsen the matter therefore clothes with proper fit that is the outfit should neither be too loose nor too clingy.

. Dark coloured clothes should be avoided, lighter shades or slight bright colours is a good option.

. Sleeveless clothes should be avoided as it exposes the thin arms.

. Trousers or pants with thicker material is a good option like linen, jeans, cotton, woolen pants for winter season. Cargos is also a good option.

Always wear clothes in which you feel comfortable in and yet it enhances your personality. You would definitely look good in such outfits. Before purchasing the clothes it is important to read its washing and after care instructions. Experiment with new clothes and styles should be in moderation. Select clothes that have proper cuts and fittings. Proper cuts in an outfit could really make you look sensuous, but it should be according to your figure type. Shapeless and too loose t-shirts are a perfect no-no for every woman. No matter what your body type is, every woman has some features that you love most so try to enhance that feature so that the attention of the onlooker is focused on positive features rather than less positive ones. For example- women with fat body structure might have proper shape in waist area so choose outfit that enhances the waist area. The main focus should be on coordinating perfect outfit with complementing jewellery, accessories and footwear and here you are ready to swap away the world by your charm.

Tats, Dress and Fingerprints... Have You Looked at How You Look Lately?

We take in 55% of our world or more through our eyes. It is our single biggest source of information gathering. There is an old saying "what you are speaks so loud I can't see what you are saying." As Customer Service Professionals we need to be aware that people everywhere are looking at us and our work area and determining if they will do business with us based on what they see.

In my travels I make observations about fashion, dress, overall impressions and general appearance nearly everywhere I go. I make it a habit to ask seminar participants what is the norm for their area and their position. Lately I have noticed more acceptance for tattoos and jewelry.

I have no qualms about hiring someone with tats or rings. However, there are certain situations I would not hire that person if the position required heavy personal face to face customer contact. As our society becomes more open to those ideas, I am certain this will change. And I would certainly hire that person for any other position for which they would be qualified. I am not the fashion police however I do follow a few basic guidelines.

If the position requires heavy face to face contact, no excessive jewelry or tats visible. It's my basic rule.

I think we all can agree that certain positions require more of a formal dress code than others. For example, in a bank would you hire the person who had an eyebrow ring and face tat to work as a teller? Probably not. That person might do well in the local mall at the hottest fashion outlet. It's really a matter of application. Does the overall appearance of the person fit the type of business you are doing?

I have had seminar participants tell me of other dress code requirements. No underarm exposure is one I have heard. No black leather is another. For women, no excessive makeup. For guys, no spike head hair.

These are some of the areas in personal dress that you might want to take a look at. In my seminars I always tell people that the norm for their business is the base for your dress code. If everyone wears jeans and sweatshirts, guess what. That's the norm. Dress appropriately for your business.

You might want to polish your appearance. People like to do business with a person who is clean, neat looking. It makes them feel comfortable. I also have a rule that you should dress just slightly better than your customers. Try it.

Have you ever judged the experience you were about to receive on how the place looked when you walked in? Let me tell you a little story about an experience I had when I lived in Japan. I love to play golf and I wanted to go to the driving range and practice when I lived there. I had no idea what to expect, having been to driving ranges here in the States. I walked into this place, and it was gorgeous. Solid wood paneling throughout, the front desk looked like a 5 star hotel, and it seemed as if there were 3 staff members for every person. What did I think when I walked in? "WOW!" After I finished practicing they even cleaned my clubs! It was fantastic! The best service I have ever received at a driving range. And I never forgot how I felt when I walked in the door for the first time.

The point is the appearance and my 1st impression set the stage for my expectations. And your customers are doing the same thing when they walk in your door. They are looking around and taking it all in. And then deciding how their experience is going to be. If you were a customer in your store, would your 1st impression make you want to business with you?

Polish your work environment. I visited one of my old dealerships a few weeks ago and could not believe how dirty the place looked. The reason. The service dept has white walls, and other dealership personnel have put their hands on the wall, hence fingerprints. This is the first thing you see when you walk in the door. The overall 1st impression is the place being dirty and greasy. The rest of the store could have been beautiful, and the personnel courteous and professional but I only remembered how dirty it looked.

My 1st impression is my lasting impression and so is yours. So, take a look around your work area. Is it clean? Are there dirty fingerprints or marks on the wall? Is your work area messy? Piles of paper and overflowing in and out baskets says volumes about you and your business. Make sure yours reflects how you want to look to others.

And clean up your in basket!

What Dress to Choose For Your Friend's Birthday?

Posted: Friday, June 29, 2012

By Rebecca Hughes

If you have been invited to your friend's birthday party, you are probably already wondering about as to what you should wear. Sometimes a birthday party can be in the form of a formal dinner, sometimes it can be a barbecue, and sometimes it is celebrated as a night at the clubs. Therefore, dressing appropriately can be very challenging.

One of the most difficult things to decipher nowadays is the dress code that is mentioned in invitations. While it is pretty easy to understand what casual and formal mean, sometimes the new kinds of dress code like dressy formal or casual formal can be very difficult to understand. However, all is not lost. You can make an educated guess about what you should wear for your friend's birthday by observing some things.

Firstly, you need to look at the time. If the birthday party is at night, then you need to be a little more dressed up than a sundress. However, if the party is during the day, like at lunch or in the early afternoon, then you should probably not wear a black shiny mini dress, and instead opt for something more pastel in colours or slightly bright but not too overdressed.

Secondly, you should look at the location. If your friend is throwing the party at her house, then it could be a very formal dinner and for this you should wear something very classy. However, if it is being thrown in a club, then you know that you need to dress up to the nines, like you would if you were going for clubbing.

Thirdly, you should think about your friend's age. Someone who is turning fifty is less likely to throw a dance party as compared to someone who is turning twenty three or even thirty. You can Make an educated guess about what you should wear based on your friend's age.

Finally, you need to think about your friend's personality. If you friend is very bubbly and likes going to clubs, then she must have probably arranged a party that will be fun for her. If your friend is more interested in staying at home, then you are probably going to a party that is more serious.

One of the simplest things you can do when you can't decide is to dress in something very timeless. A little black dress is the perfect thing to wear when you don't know what you should wear. If you have one that fits you perfectly, and looks great on you, then you should wear it in case you aren't sure about the dress code.

Even after looking at all the factors you are still confused; ask any other friends who are also invited, for advice. If they are all dressing up, it means you should dress up as well since you would never want to feel like the odd one out.

Deciding what to wear at a birthday party is not that difficult, and you can definitely make the right choice if you look at all the factors stated above and make an educated decision.

How to Dress With Flair in the Workplace

Posted: Sunday, June 17, 2012

By Gian Fiero

Dress for success! It's a phrase we've all heard, but does it still hold credence in workplaces that have become more casual?

Absolutely; even more so.

I've always worn ties. To me wearing a tie means business. Ties are accessories that help convey - at a glance - a brand of professionalism which aids me in an industry (entertainment) where personal and professional boundaries often get blurred. In addition to adding flair to my wardrobe, ties also serve as a reminder to not get too comfortable in my work environment (since wearing a tie can be an uncomfortable experience).

Not wearing a tie doesn't mean that you are any less of a professional; it simply means that you are not readily identified as one. Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, is rarely seen in a tie; neither is Russell Simmons, President of Rush Communications and founder of Def Jam recordings. They are both well-known and well-respected and thus; do not need the edge that wearing a tie or a suit gives them.

They are notable exceptions.

If you are in college, a recent graduate, newly indoctrinated into the workforce, or just want a visual makeover the following tips will help you add flair to your wardrobe and give you the edge you need to stand out and get ahead.

COLORS: Most people don't know what colors they look best in. If you are unsure, just take note of the colors you are wearing when you receive compliments. Chances are, those will be the colors that complement the natural hues of your skin tone and aura. Just because you like a color doesn't mean that you should overdose on it. We all know that Prince loves purple but he seldom wears it. Women like the slenderizing effects of black and tend to favor it for that reason. Wearing all black may work for Elvira and Run D.M.C, but it doesn't portray you in the best light. From a fashion standpoint, black is a neutralizing, non-color which makes it easy to coordinate with colors. When worn, you should add flair to it with energetic colors like orange, yellow, peach, or red. Studies reveal that colors affect people's moods and perceptions. Here's a partial sampling of colors and what they communicate.

Black: Serious, to-the-point, simplicity, authority;
Blue: Conservative, even tempered, reliable;
Brown: Mature, reliable, responsible, down to earth;
Grey: Practical, calm, willing to work hard, wisdom;
Purple: Mystery, spirituality, unconventionality;
Red: Passion, intensity, aggressiveness;
Yellow: Friendly, imaginative, idealistic, creative, artistic;
White: Purity, cleanliness, holiness, meticulousness.

FIT & CUT: Not enough attention is paid to the proper fit and cut (amount of material used) of clothing for both men and women. When a good fit is achieved, it makes your clothes and your body look better. Urban clothing (Sean John) tends to be cut loser and runs larger than European clothing (Gianni Versace) which is cut tighter and runs smaller. Check and, if necessary, adjust your size so that neither appears to be several sizes larger or smaller than its supposed to be.

Both men and women should check the clothes that they wear most frequently. General wear-and-tear will affect the fit of shirts/blouses (especially pullovers). Pants are also susceptible to fit modifications due to weight gain or loss.

Relevant to the fit of your clothes is the epicenter of your power: your midsection (chest and stomach) which impacts your posture and your perceived strength. Pay attention to how your clothes rest upon your body in this area. An improper fit will make you look sloppy and diminish your presence. For those with expanded midsections, seek out designers that have shirts/blouses that are cut to de-emphasize your extra girth.

MATCHING & COMPLEMENTING: Someone once told me that matching was out of style...as they stood there wearing red and green...red and green never go together...unless they are on a Mexican or Italian flag. The rule of thumb here is that dark and light colors complement each other because they help each other to become more visible. The more similar two colors are in tone, the less they complement each other - like green and red. Wear coordinates (tops and bottoms) that complement each other.

When going for a uniformed look (wearing the same colors) check if they really do match. The color black has different shades which can be altered by its vibrancy. Make sure that black sport coat and black slacks you own are actually the same shade of black when you wear them together. That especially goes for white. Are your pants bone white and your blouse eggshell white? As subtle as the difference may be, it still constitutes a mismatch. Viewing items in bright or natural light before wearing them will help you to make an accurate pairing.

PATTERNS: When choosing patterned coordinates, match them up with solid colors (contrary to the busy styles displayed in GQ and Vogue magazines). This causes less dizziness and makes your ensemble more appealing. If you have a wide or rotund frame, steer clear of horizontal lines; they make you look bigger. Also, beware of intricate and abstract designs; both create visual distortions that are unsettling and should be avoided - unless you like being confused for a computer game (acceptable in college, but makes you look juvenile in the workplace). Bold, decipherable patterns work best and are classier.

BRINGING SEXY BACK...TASTEFULLY: Women have always grappled with sexuality issues in the workplace. Most of the time it's men who are doing the grappling (or the groping), but there are ways to bring sexy back to the office tastefully.

In a professional setting, the rule of thumb for women is to control the focus (of men). The less cleavage you show, the less you are viewed as a sex object. You won't be able to stop men from looking at your chest, but you can influence how fixated they are on it.

You can maximize your femininity and minimize your sexuality by wearing dresses, long skirts (legs are viewed as less risqué in the workplace), or form fitting (but not tight) slacks with flowing, sensuous blouses, or contemporary tops that highlight, but don't emphasize, your feminine qualities.

SHOES: Technically, shoes are considered accessories, but if you really want to add flair to your wardrobe, build your ensemble from the foundation up; just like a house. Start with a quality pair of shoes. Open toe shoes for women should never be worn without the requisite pedicure and toe nail beautification. Men should always keep their shoes polished and well maintained (i.e. in good condition). Worn-down and worn-out shoes detract from your attire.

ACCESSORIES: Accessories (as stated above) are little things that make a big difference in your wardrobe. Watches, rings, necklaces, bracelets, and belts should be worn modestly; never excessively. Accessories also reveal your personality and true identity. They have the ability to adorn and enhance your attire when worn sparingly as accents. They also show that you pay attention to fine details and you are willing to put forth extra effort, and that's what dressing with flair is all about.

A Dress Makes a Woman

One thing women have over men, no doubt, is a better selection of clothing. Men are traditionally limited to a narrow selection of fashion options. They can wear jeans, slacks, or shorts. They can choose t-shirts, button up shirts, or sweaters. With the exception of a few variations like the outdated turtleneck, men don't have many choices. Sure, they have a variety of colors, but, let's face it, that really doesn't broaden the horizons much. You could say they have it easier, only a few things to choose from when it's time to get dressed, and most of it is designed for comfort. If you like to show off your style and be noticed, it's definitely good to be a woman. In every article of clothing we buy, we have hundreds of options. Different cuts, colors, and fabrics, and accessories galore, it's not wonder women have a better time shopping.

High heels, spaghetti straps, and skirts are a few things exclusive to the female wardrobe. Most synonymous, however, with the female form, is the dress. Dresses offer the ultimate in versatility and femininity. Dresses showcase a woman's beauty and charm, while highlighting her best features. Dresses can be found in all shapes and sizes, for any shape or size of woman. With fabrics ranging from delicate, feminine lace to sexy leather, dresses help a woman say who she is. With every occasion a woman can change her look with a dress. Historically, dresses were the primary form of acceptable clothing for women, but in modern times, the dress is a matter of choice, not necessity. For every situation, there is a perfect dress. Finding the perfect dress for any occasion is an art.

Choosing a dress that suits your body style can highlight your best features. The science of the right dress revolves around color, fabric, and features. A dress should draw attention away from your flaws. If you have wide hips, a beaded neckline will help draw attention up and away from your hips. If you want to appear taller, a long, slim dress will give you the appearance of length. Finding the perfect color can make a dress seem like it was made for you. The rule of thumb is to look for bold colors if you have light or medium skin. Light colors will highlight the best features of a woman with dark skin. Fabric makes a big difference in the way a dress fits. To hide a problem middle area, loose, flowing materials will give you a slender appearance. Stretch fabrics are great for women with a beautiful body. Dresses come in a variety of cuts that can suit any woman. From business dresses to fun sun dresses, to sexy cocktail dresses, any occasion could be a good one for a dress. Low necklines, thigh high slits on the leg, and low backs let women show off their sexiest features. Accessories take your dress to the next level. A rope of beads or a beautiful necklace can add class to a formal dress, and a belt of scarf can add some fun to a sweater dress. High heels, pumps, and even boots can change the look of a dress to suit the occasion.

Dresses are one of the many things that set women apart from men. Wearing a dress makes a woman feel pretty, confident, and feminine. With the thousands of combinations of color, fabric, and cut, every woman can feel beautiful wearing a dress for any event.
